Trip Planning for Owner-Operators: Fuel, Weather and Parking in One Place

October 19, 2026 · 4 min read

A good trip plan isn't about the fastest route. It's about knowing what the load really pays after fuel, where you'll stop, and what the weather is doing before you're in it.

Before you accept the load

  • Total miles, including deadhead to the pickup.
  • Fuel cost: miles divided by your real MPG, times the diesel price on that lane.
  • Rate per mile after fuel. If it's below your minimum, negotiate or pass.

Before you roll

  1. Check the weather at each stop for the day you'll be there, not just today.
  2. Pick your fuel stops on the cheaper side of state lines when the route allows.
  3. Find truck parking for your stop before your hours run short. Lots fill up in the evening.
  4. Save a backup: a second truck stop or a hotel with truck parking.

On the road

Keep the plan on one screen you can read at a glance. Only touch it when you're parked or have a passenger, and always check truck restrictions in your truck GPS.

How TallyHaul helps

The trip planner shows miles, estimated fuel cost from regional diesel prices, and the weather at each stop on the day you'll arrive. It finds truck stops, truck parking, scales, repair shops and hotels with truck parking along the way. Driver Mode then gives you a big-button screen for the next stop, and hands off to Google Maps, Apple Maps or Waze.

This is general information, not legal, tax or financial advice. Your rate confirmation, factoring agreement and your state's rules decide what applies to you.
